A festival to support creative and artistic expression, Starlight Cinema – Evian Short Film Festival is the culmination of a competition attracting filmmakers throughout the region to submit their original short films. Over 140 applications for entry were submitted for a chance to win prizes worth over $33,000.

Prior to the deadline on 16 May 2003, both aspiring and experienced filmmakers were invited to submit their short films to be considered for screening at the festival. Two weeks before the festival, 3 June 2003, the eight short-listed filmmakers will be announced.

The eight short-listed films will premiere at the festival and prizes will be awarded to the competition’s Winner, a Runner-Up and the Public’s Favourite winner, set amidst a beautiful outdoor setting under the stars at Fort Canning, in the traditional Starlight Cinema style.

The Winner and Runner-up will be chosen on the night by a panel of prominent film industry experts and celebrity judges.

The Public’s Favourite will be chosen by the audience through Short Message Service (SMS) or by voting forms that are distributed as they enter the venue.

The main criteria for the production and admission of each film, which adds to the uniqueness of the event, is the incorporation of a ‘Starlight Item’ in the short film. This year, the ‘Starlight Item’ is an Evian bottle, logo or image.

The festival has attracted film entries from some of the leading and aspiring filmmakers throughout the region.

The finals will be held at Fort Canning Park on 22 June 2003 (Sunday).

Doors open at 7pm.

Producers: Lisa A. Cunico
Country: Singapore

Synopsis: The primary themes surrounding the short film “Urban Expansion” are Love, Loss, Religion & Disease. It’s about how human beings find themselves, or not, through these 4 very powerful emotions and realities of Life. The strong use of color is meant to strengthen the idea that everything around us can be seen in techni-color if only we try to look a little deeper into ourselves. It’s about loving when you are losing, losing yourself when you are in love, being aware of a higher power and being aware that we are a very fragile society.

Lost in N.Y.C

Director: Frankie Ng Tze Wei
Producers: Frankie Ng Tze Wei
Country: Singapore / USA

Synopsis: Lost in N.Y.C tells the story of two tourist Evian bottles sight seeing in NY. There, they encounter (amongst other things) sights of the preparation for and protest against the war, that overwhelm them and leave them wishing for a better world. There is a near encounter between the two bottles, which layers the question of hope for a better world. On the one hand, where they would both meet and fall in love, and on the other, where NYC is an idyllic paradise.

Cellshocked

Director: Anthony Koithra
Producers: Anthony Koithra
Country: Singapore

Synopsis: As an interpretation of the traditional monomyth, as described in Joseph Campbell’s ‘Hero of a Thousand Faces’, Cellshocked tells the story of a brash youngster, filled with untapped talent who overcomes personal tragedy and a terrifying enemy to achieve greatness in his world. The only difference is that in Cellshocked the youngster is a red R/C car called Rocket – and he only talks in rhyme.

YOUR WORLD, MY WOLRD

Director: Low Ngai Yuen
Producers: Low Ngai Yuen
Country: Malaysia

Synopsis: All Ming could make out is that he has just got dumped – for Evian. Frustrated and living in denial, he tries hard to read between the lines.

Cream Doggies

Director: Kristian Hansen
Producers: Kristian Hansen
Country: USA

Synopsis: Through the eyes of a wise old dog, we follow an afternoon in the life of “Baby Koopsa,” a blue pants wearing girl with a distinctive walk, as she tries the bridge the gap between two worlds: the comfort and consumption of Thailand’s upscale shopping malls, and the tough life of Bangkok’s many street dogs.

Refugee

Director: Samuel Tan Huiyao / Daniel Tham Dek Won / Heratnor Bin Kassanuri
Producers: Samuel Tan Huiyao / Daniel Tham Dek Won / Heratnor Bin Kassanuri
Country: Singapore

Synopsis: “When home isn’t where the heart is, we drift elsewhere to seek refuge. A father faces the burdens that haunt him, a student torn between loves, and a relationship that has to be let go. The cold stairwell plays host to these vulnerable hearts and bared souls- personalities that have never felt as comfortable at home as they are here.”

Two States

Director: Andrew Tan
Producers: Andrew Tan
Country: Singapore

Synopsis: Two plots: 22 year-old Matilda, depressive and suicidal, has given up on the people around her and on life – she finds a way to end it all; an absurd street performer and his friend experimenting with ways to shock the public. Both plots are caught up within themselves until they converge and meet, consequently affecting and sensitising each other.

Run

Director: Jon Lim
Producers: Jon Lim / Nicholas Chia
Country: Singapore

Synopsis: A guy (also know as “the Runner” as his name is not mentioned in the film) woke up one morning and realizes that there is something that he need to attend to immediately after browsing through his daily newspaper.
